Dear sir,
joomulus is without question a very good module for joomla tags, the question is that it does not support Chinese Characters.

Any suggestions for me?

Hi relaxssl,
I've been working on supporting foreign languages. But some of the Asian languages are very complex.

A few days ago I thought I was onto something with solving Japanese support. But when I encoded all the Japanese characters into the Joomulus file, the file became 7MB which can't go on a web page. So I only encoded Japanese Kana, which has 300+ characters.

From my research into the Chinese language, well from what I read on wikipedia, I was told only 3000 - 4000 characters were needed for basic language. This would still create a Joomulus file around 4MB, which is way too high.

I'm working on a solution now that has some advantages and disadvantages. Rather than encoding the language characters, I'll try to use device fonts, that's fonts already installed on the users machine. This brings Joomulus to around 5KB, which is great. But if you use Chinese characters, it'll only display to people with Chinese language support enabled on there machine. So users like myself wont see Joomulus. Then again, if its a Chinese site with Chinese articles, people without that language enabled on there computer probably wont go to the site in the first place.

In short, I really want to have a Chinese supported Joomulus. But I can't promise when it'll come out. Maybe in a week, but with Christmas around the corner here it might have to be early next year.

Dear Bear,

May I ask how this Chinese support going on? If i understood right, the problem was there were too many Chinese charaters to be integrated. Do you think if it's possible to allow user to input only those Chinese characters that they need to display when they install? I mean actually there are only tens of Characters are needed for each installation.

I just installed the latestest version of Joomulus, and after I filled some tags in Chinese, and selected the language to Japanese, a few of them can be displayed. The tag cloud looks like a charm, with regret though - others are missed.

Or maybe you have a good solution already?

Look forward to your reply soon!

Thanks

Alright just to get things moving, there is a quick Beta which is available here joomlabear.com/file/view/30/14.html
Be great to get your feed back. This should only work if you have the language enabled on your computer. You'll also have to select the language from the drop down as "Unicode Beta". There are a few module parameters which aren't usable in this language yet, like x y values.

Also it could also benefit other Chinese users if we could get a translation of the module parameters. But if we could test it first then start worrying about translations :)
