Is it possible to add an auto-adjust function for the backgrounds relating on the screen-resolution?

At this stage there is not an option to do this - it might not be that difficult... had a quick look on google www.javascriptkit.com/howto/newtech3.shtml
I am a bit busy over next few weeks to look at this properly though.

A good friend was telling me recently about a nice piece of javascript which will automatically scale the background image to the size of the users screen - this is not the same as serving different resolution images obviously. Instead the background would just be stretched. I'll have to get some more info on this.

Another option is setting the background image to center in the CSS - I'm doing this on the Joomlabear rebuild - you can see work in progress here:

I've faded the edges of my image to black with a gradient and then set the background of the page to black also - works quite well on my 24inch screen.

Dont forget, in this day and age - there are hundreds of different monitor sizes, a stretched image may look fine on your 19" but on a 20" widescreen it will look bloody stupid.

Stick to a 1024 centered image and thats it. Dont upscale and down downscale.

I think if scaling could be applied proportionally so no stretching was applied, and the right sort of image was used, then it could work ok. Some images, especially jpegs of organic/nature scenes can scale quite well.

Scaling is quite a bit of extra work for a feature most probably won't notice though.

I do like the way you can position your background image when using CSS centering, if done carefully areas of the background can be positioned in relation to the web page. I spent quite a while getting the sun rays to come out the side of the header ;-)

Thanks! The idea with CSS centering was good so far. For the moment I think it works fine.
But it would be good if there will be a possibility to scale the images relating to screen resolution.
