You can use flash but in many cases a slideshow or image rotator module that is powered by javascript will work really well.
I really like the free 'simple image rotator'
Scroll down the page at the link below and download it:

Then install the module and publish it in the 'feature' module position.
Next set the dimensions of your module in teh parameters - 966 pixels wide and height can be whatever you need it to be.
Make some images that are 966px wide and whatever height you set and place them in the directory specified in the module parameters.
That's what I would do.
If you really want to put flash there then I would suggest installing
www.joomlafckeditor.com/ because it allows direct uploads of flash files.
You will then want to create a custom html module and publish it in 'feature' position. upload a flash (swf) file and make sure your flash is 966pixels wide as above.
