New Templates for Joomla 1.6 ? 2 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hi Bears , This may be a little early as Joomla 1.6 beta is still in the works , but what do see in the Joomlabear future for templates ? I was thinking of a new site but wondering if I should wait until 1.6 comes out this spring ? Is there anything we users should be preparing for with our 1.5 sites ? Thanks in advance , we're just a little excited about 1.6 , it looks great !

Hi HobbleHill,
Apologies I missed this post over New Year - I just realized there were a couple that didn't get replied to.

At this stage the templating side of Joomla 1.6 does not appear to be a lot different from 1.5 - at least from a template designers perspective. The structure will be similar but a number of things will become a little easier which is always appreciated.

I agree 1.6 looks great though! I think from a site management perspective the new features make Joomla twice as powerful as it was previously.

Things I am looking forward to most are:

Nested categories - no longer will we have to assign an article to a single section and a category - but if needed we can can now organise our articles within as many nested categories as needed.

Extended user profile fields will be much appreciated - this has been achievable through using various extensions, etc, but has always been quite a lot of work for something one would expect to be relatively straight forward.

ACL - or Access Control - another thing that could be implemented with various 3rd party extensions but was often more trouble that it was worth.

The Joomla admin area has a more streamlined template which looks and feels really good in the brief tests I have done - should make workflow a little easier.

In terms of waiting - you should be able to upgrade with relative ease so I would say get started whenever it suits you - and I'm always here to give you hand with the upgrade if need be.

Kind regards
