Struggling With Menus 2 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
I know PHP and a little bit of CSS and am technically oriented, but I'm really stuck. I have two problems. First of all, I really feel like I need a Top Menu. I am a real newbie to Joomla, but it looks like everything is published to view the menu, but it doesn't come up with Transparent Bliss 1.5. I then tried it with Transparent Bliss 3.0 (and not even sure why I started with TB 1.5 to be honest - wouldn't 3.0 be better?). Anyway, I'm really just working "out of the box" with the Joomla site (except I changed a few things :)....

Anywho, the other thing I want to explore is Accordian menus. And I know I have a ways to go on the CSS, but I am having trouble getting basic functionality working and I've tried every kind of fish possible and a few tools that sound like they were created by cows.

I just can't get anything going with menus and some of it is because I bought an extension called Rapid Recipes and they provide and accordian menu, so I want to emulate it I guess. Their product comes with a built in DB driven menu that does the accordian thing quite nicely.

ANY ADVICE AT ALL WOULD BE WELCOMED!!! THANK YOU!!!

My website, in utter shambles, is here:

Hi Steve.

First off great site! I love cooking sites.
Just want to check, have you published a menu in the position 'top-nav' Big Bear was very happy with his top menu on this template, it will work.

By accordion menu do you mean drop down? It'll be quite a bit of custom work integrating a DB accordion into Joomla. There are a few cool options and I mentioned in an earlier post Big Bear and I are going to meet up later in the week and get drop down menus going in all the templates.

I think it is the superfish menu module. Thats a good start for anyone wanting a drop down but requires some css tweaking to integrate the style with a template.

Thanks for the kind words and the recipe! I am working hard on getting the framework right before I move too deep into the content, but it's great to have a head start on the content too...

I finally found an accordion style menu module for the left hand side called SBD Rollmenu. I think I have all the CSS squared away.

I still don't have the top menu showing though? I am pretty new with Joomla, so 'bear' with me. I have created a new menu and in the position dropdown I specified "top". In the target position, I typed in "top-nav" per your reply (which I am sure I don't understand that part).

I am just using mod_mainmenu (the one that came with Joomla) and displaying the same simple menu that I am displaying down the left hand side. It must be something simple, but I'm not seeing it.

Hi Steve,
Publish top menu in position Top-Nav - give it a menu class suffix of _sf

Ok, I see that using TransparentBliss-1.5 was the problem. There is NO top-nav available there (AFAICS). I switched to TransparentBliss 3.0 and copied my CSS changes over and everything is blissful again!

Oh great! sorry I did not understand that at first - TB 3 has quite a few new features.
www.homecookingforsmarties.com/ is looking great BTW - let me know when we can add to the showcase.

I am having the same problem with creating the top menu. Is Transparent Bliss 3.0 available for free? If not do I assume I have to add top-nav as a position?

Hey timbreese,

Welcome at JoomlaBear. Nice that you use our tempates.

The Transparent Bliss 3.0 was a lot of work and is only for payabel members.

Yes, you can add the top-nav over an modul-position. But it is not only one click. And to setup the DropDown Menu is not easy.

I just wanted to add that the amount of money that Joomla Bear asks to get you set up with templates and support is minimal compared to what it might take you if you spend hours and hours to lay out the same foundation.

Of course, they cannot answer every question about Joomla! because it is a big product that constantly evolves, but when you need the help it is available either here or in the Joomla! community at large. I have been away from it for a month or two now (stupid day job!), but I hope to get back to it soon.

And, finally, yes, some dropdown menus are hard to set up. At least they were for me...

OK- I decided to join. I am a member of the Metropolitan Opera Chorus in New York City and I build websites on the side. I liked your transparent bliss for our chorus website because of the ability to choose your own background photo. I hope Transparent Bliss 3 has that option.

Liebe Grüße aus New York!

I assumed that in Transparent Bliss 3.0 I would publish the top menu in the top position, but it is not appearing. I'm sure I missed your instructions elsewhere on the site...

But the documentation also says use the top-nav menu position when the regular Joomla installation only has a top position. Am I missing something?

My apologies- now I see what I missed. The top-nav position choice is now available!

when the TransparentBliss 3.0 Template is active on your site, create it this module-position over the index.php .

Can you post a link to your site? Then I can find the mistake faster :-)
