I don't think that's off topic at all :)
I personally use Fireworks most of the time - previously Macromedia, now owned by Adobe - It's simply a gradient applied to the font (radial gradient) and then I have duplicated the text to create a reflection, flipped it horizontally and applied a gradient mask to make it fade out.
You could of course use Photoshop and alot would - I have just found over the years I work faster in Fireworks, at least for screen (web) based graphics.
I'll write up a quick tute if thats not enough info and people are interested.
Post your interest here as I have a few tutorials to writeup and it's all a matter of priorities.
One last note, fonts were downloaded free! from
