Verdana Is a popular web safe font to use. More so than Tahoma, which isn't as widely supported. A new one released on Windows is Trebuchet MS (another sans serif font).
Fonts that are easy to read on screen are sans serif rather than serif fonts (serif = little elaborate things on the letters). Sans is the French word for without so fonts to use safely on the web are the ones 'without all fancy stuff' (sans serif).
It took me ages to realize why I couldn't just use any font

But when you think of it I wonder why no browser hasn't developed the function of embedding a font. They'd add 100kb to 180kb next to nothing. any way, hope that helps.
